Mom and pop based businesses are a growing and thriving market. 9 times out of 10 if a company has taken the time to create a website and advertise locally they are not a fly by night. If you want hi end and multiple years of experience get ready to spend a little extra for what you want. There are many companies out there with less than 20 years of experience that are ready to give you a great product and guarantee their work.
Get a few bids to compare prices. Hell get 5 of them. If you got 3 that are very close that is probably what it should cost you. A really low bid is not always your best bet. Most of all get it in writing. There is nothing wrong with asking questions and suggesting ideas to improve a better quality or longer lasting product. You are paying for it and it is your home, one of the largest investments you may ever make in your lifetime.
That being said remember all improvements are part of an investment to get some sort of a return at a later date. There are some areas you can cut in. Dont ever take away from quality of craftsmanship. It takes the average person 6-8 years to hone in on their specialty.
